ON THE MOTORCYCLE WITH AFRICA: NOT TO STOP AT THE LAST MILE FROM THE PASSION FOR TRAVELING AND THE DESIRE TO BE USEFUL IS BORN DOCTORS WITH AFRICA CUAMM GROUP OF BIKERS.
The bike is a fantastic vehicle: it joins us for passion but, thanks to its cheapness and versatility, it is the ideal way to reach the last stretch of road that separates the patient from a first health center. Our goal is to ensure that more and more people can achieve the right to health. For this we support, with various initiatives, including fundraising, the purchase of motorcycles and expenses related to transport in difficult areas. We have ongoing projects in Sierra Leone, South Sudan and Uganda, and others we are developing in various areas of Africa, all places where a small motorcycle can make the difference between life and death. Anyone can join our effort.
WHAT WE DO
In many African countries, reaching a hospital can be very difficult. The territories are vast, the infrastructure almost absent, the climatic and land conditions make every transfer impervious. Easy to understand how a delay in help can easily become fatal. So in these situations the bike, which for us is primarily a tool for recreation, of passion, becomes the best solution to reach the lost village, to bring a sick person to hospital or to deliver a vaccine. The bike is an authentic tool of salvation. It breaks down the geographical limit because it can go almost anywhere. It breaks down the cultural limit, because it is not seen as an ambulance, it is easy to be used and can give a social role within the village. It lowers the economic limit, because it has very low operating costs and it is easy to repair.
IN MOTO WITH AFRICA MISSION
Once we understood the importance of the motorbike in those contexts, we could not remain indifferent. Therefore we have set a goal as a team of Doctors with Africa CUAMM motorcyclists: to equip with motorcycle ambulances all the African regions in which we operate and, more “widely”, to allow always more people, especially mothers and children, to reach the cures.
How we do it
To promote our business, we plan, organize and attend initiatives, events, competitions, rallies, tours. We raise funds, allocating the generosity of many motorcyclists like us, as well as private individuals, companies and associations, directly to Doctors with Africa CUAMM. We buy motorcycles, full of petrol, we agree on the maintenance with local repair shops, we distribute vouchers to mothers to pay riders who take them to the hospital or bring them back home, safe and sound with their child.
The commitment of In Moto With Africa is therefore to buy the tools where necessary or to encourage the use of motorcycles and local realities where already present. Being in motion but, above all, with Africa.
Where we do it
Currently our project has already started in Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Uganda where it already has shown its effectiveness. Thanks to the help of companies, associations and simple enthusiasts, it is in expansion and we plan to intervene progressively in all the countries in which operates Doctors with Africa – CUAMM.
SOUTH SUDAN:
In South Sudan the medical workers of Doctors with Africa – CUAMM are already using ours motorbikes for vaccination campaigns in the area, reaching many more villages and patients.
SIERRA LEONE:
70% of the pediatric hospitalizations of Pujehun hospital, in the peripheral area of Sierra Leone, take place riding a motorcycle. It is about 1800 children, who arrive with their mothers from the villages more lost to be treated and from here they always return by motorbike. The current average is 150 transports per month. At the beginning of 2020, In Moto with Africa team carried out a mission in Sierra Leone, where it was able to touch the various problems facing the country and to plan, even more in detail, an intervention strategy to make this transport service accessible to more and more villages.
UGANDA:
Uganda is the first country in which we intervened by purchasing 6 motorcycle ambulances and assigning them to local health personnel. We also supported the purchase of drug kits and materials for the childbirth, to be transported by motorbike, and the payment of vouchers to local motorcyclist drivers for the transport of mothers. In a short time, after these initiatives, the number of hospital parts has tripled.
THE TEAM STORY
In Moto with Africa is a story of travel, friendship and passion. Travel on the African dirt roads, red and dusty, that go as far as possible from the known world and closer than you can believe the soul. Friendship between different people, but joined by the same iron conviction that it is indispensable move for the last and do something more to improve the conditions of whom in those lost places fight for survival every day.
Passion for the motorcycle, in all its forms and declinations. These are the elements that have united a group of passionate motorcyclists with Doctors with Africa Cuamm, the first Italian non-governmental organization that operates from seventy years in African continent for the right to health, alongside local governments, healthcare facilities and doctors, ensuring access to care, especially for mothers and children. From this union was born the team of In Moto with Africa, a working group that operates inside the organizational structure of Doctors with Africa CUAMM with the aim of raising awareness of the world of two wheels and collecting funds for mobility, especially on motorbikes, in the African countries where the NGO operates. All projects are therefore planned and implemented by Doctors with Africa CUAMM. Every single euro donated goes directly to finance what has been programmed. Every enthusiast, association or company can join our team and contribute to the achievement of our goals.
